Intermediate lesson

Below you will find some of my lessons for intermediate players, in the order that I would recommend them to be learned. More videos coming soon, also some lessons with a guitarist and bassist, so keep an eye out!

Subscribe to the cajonbox newsletter to stay updated on new lessons!

Intermediate lesson 1.

This lesson is to teach you to use your fingers and develop a wider range in your dynamics. It also teaches you to control your accents.

Intermediate lesson 2.

This lesson teaches you to control your accents and get a wider range on your dynamics. Also good for 6/8 or 3/4 grooves.

Hi. I just wanted to say thanks for the lessons. I actually started playing November 2014. I am flamenco dancer (learning) but started cajon with your lessons when I got an invite from a musician. Now I am playing around London. I would like to invite you to our gigs or open mic night and see your student at work 🙂 Linked to facebook page. Thanks again and I would love to be able to discuss what would work better in blues music.

I 1st tried a cajon at Easter this year, now I have one of my own and spend a couple of hours practising each day. Your lessons are very helpful. If I find something tricky, I leave it for a day and find I have improved overnight. Magic! I too have a weak left hand, I am recovering from a frozen left shoulder and really have to consciously work on that side’s strength. Come to Christchurch New Zealand sometime!

    re: intermediate lesson 2
1.great exercise for immediate level drummers and applicable for percussionists or all kind. I could see this exercise useful for sticks on the snare as well.
    2. Also very useful for anyone at beginner level just to listen and improve/develop their sense of rhythm.
3.Useful warmup for pros as well.
Thanks and the video really justifies your popularity. Great work and keep it up.

Heidi, you are simply brilliant. Thanks for sharing your ideas and videos. It helps a lot.
I’m a music teacher from India and I’m a rhythm guitarist, bassist and percussionist too. I play the travel cajon and I’m collecting money to buy the normal cajon.
    God bless,

Your amazing. Hands down you embody what it is you are passionate about. You are one of a kind and I hope I meet a woman like you in my life. Please keep spreading the love and the music will follow. I produce a world music radio show on Fridays from 12noon to 2:30pm at http://www.wmua.org It is the campus radio station for UMass Amherst. I created a drum circle class where during the semester once a week I bring all of my drums to facilitate and encourage others to play and find the rhythm that’s inside them already. Your videos will enable me to become a better percussionist, and thus enable the other students I am with to benefit even more. A good cause (like posting free videos) can spread into an effect that diffracts all across the world in a positive way. Thank you.
    Peace,
    Kevin
p.s. IF you’d like, I would be more than happy to play a lot of your music during my show. If you’d be so kind to send a cd or two to the station–I doubt that they have any of your music already.

    Heidi,
I’ve been playing for awhile and have been looking around for something to help me really nail down the basics, polish up my technique, and take my playing to the next level. After searching around, I think this website and your lessons will do the trick. Thanks for the advice, help, and clarity. Truly a blessing and a gem.
Any chance you will do any videos on adding other hand drums to the mix? I watched the cymbal video (which was great), but notice you have some other toys as well. I’m playing a cajon, djembe, cymbal bass kit and mix in some tambourine and shakers here and there. I’d love to see your take on some multi-drum grooves or other basic techniques.
Thanks again, and even though I know it’s the last place on earth you will visit, we’d love to meet you out here in Indiana!

Do all your grooves/Ex with Left hand lead… and brush your teeth with left hand 🙂

Ha, funny! Been playing drums for thirty years and one thing I do to strengthen my left hand…is brush my teeth. 🙂 First few times I nearly put my eye out. Also open door knobs and do other things to become more ambidextrous.
