An intro to Rumba on the cajon

Posted By Heidi Joubert / May, 19, 2012 / 0 comments

 Hello Fellow cajon lovers!

With Fernando’s Kitchen, my band, I play the rumba about 80% of the time!! It is an essential rhythm to learn on the cajon, and the world of rumba is vast and big!! The rumba is probably one of the oldest rhythms to be used on the cajon, and goes hand in hand with the development of the cajon. This is only the foundation to get you started but there is so many things one can do with the rumba, it’s really amazing!

Heidi’s NEW signature line cajon handmade by PRK percussions!!

Posted By Heidi Joubert / April, 29, 2012 / 3 comments

Hello Everyone!!!

I am so excited! I have been working closely with PRK to create my own signature line cajon, which will be almost as good as a PRK cajon but half the price! And it will be available exclusively on cajonbox.com in approx one months time! My weekend has been spent drawing numerous amounts of designs. I have decided that my first signature line cajon model will be black, almost like the PRK Rabioso model, but with a different artwork created by myself.

The cajon will have a new string system designed for my new line, which will prevent the strings from breaking or buzzing, a rather large issue with flamenco cajons. The quality of the sound is just fantastic, for value for money it’s unbeatable!

This is another vision I have had, to create my own cajon, and finally after 4 years of seeking, I have found the right makers to make them! PRK are the TOP makers in spain (and arguably the world) and I am honoured that they have agreed to make a special cajon just me. I will play my own signature line of course.

Each cajon  will be signed and approved by myself, with a certified number and everything!!

A 20% of all profits made will go towards our Nu World charity foundation, which is also currently being set up.

As soon as the design is decided upon, we will be taking pre orders for the cajons as it seems they are going to be rather popular, we already have 12 people waiting to buy my new signature line PRK cajon.

All about the Cajon and Nu World percussions!

A personal note from the Author…

“I have long dreamed of starting up a page dedicated to cajon and percussion, a page where you can learn to play the cajon and percussion with free cajon tuition courses, and where you can find great, innovative percussions and cajons from independant makers who take every care to diligently craft and deliver an instrument of outstanding  quality.  A blog page and a community page is soon to follow, so there is so much more coming! In the meanwhile, enjoy some video lessons, arranged in order, or check out some of the newest and hippest cajons and percussions around!

Helping me on this journey are two amazing cajon/percussion maker companies (PRK percussions and Hands on Drums). Both of these companies are small, family run businesses who take pride in their hand made work. They are more than just innovative percussion makers, they are absolutely passionate about music and instruments and thats why I love their drums and I am honoured to be a partner with them! Throughout the page you will see some of their percussion instruments, like the renowned PRK cajons (the top cajon in the Flamenco world) and the new, innovative Cajudoo hybrid drum by Hands on Drums.

Thanks for visiting my site and I sincerely hope that you improve super fast in your cajon and percussion studies!! Don’t forget to comment or leave some feedback, this helps me to continually improve and stay encouraged!! Many thanks for all your support and love, It has helped get me to where I am today!

Cajon love to you all!

Tuning your Cajon

Posted By Heidi Joubert / March, 31, 2012 / 3 comments

Ok, so many ppl have been asking me lately about tuning the cajon strings and how it actually works. thing is, there is no set way to do it, unlike the guitar or piano, and really the main feature of the tuning of the strings tighter or looser means more or less snare effect (and perhaps a bit of changing the actualy tone, but that is more present when applying pressure to the front panel of the cajon whilst slapping it)

So it’s really simple…. Tune the strings tighter for a tighter, cleaner sound and a fast response, and loosen them for more snare sound, higher frequencies and sustain. I personally tweak them a little, then try the cajon and tweak more until I have achieved the desired sound from my cajon.

Another little trick you could so is to tape certain parts of the strings against the inside of the front panel of the cajon.

This is very useful especially if your strings have started getting a bit tired and you get a buzzing sound. Where you place the tape would obviously depend on where the problem/buzz lies, so you will once again, use your own intuition and try it out, test it, get to know your cajon and get to know what sounds you like and which sounds you don’t like.

You could also put a towel inside the cajon to reduce snare sounds/hollow sounds and buzzing. this is a good idea especially when miking up your cajon.

Got any advise on tuning strings and buzzing strings?

NEW cajudoo drum!

Dear fellow percussionists/cajon players!!

As an opening to my blog page, I have decided to add a vid of the latest, innovative (and VERY creative) hybrid Drum, Cajudoo, hand crafted by Hands on Drums in Germany!

Let’s discuss what you think of these sweet instruments?! Seeing that they are BRAND SPANKING NEW, I would have to pioneer my way to how to play it and what sounds it can make (which are a bit way too many haha) so any ideas or suggestions are SUPER welcome!
